Many commentaries on the Bhagavadgita have been published, with many different views. The first is Adi Sankaras eighth-century CE commentary on Bhagavadgita. Many commentators view the Bhagavadgitas setting on a battlefield as an allegory of human moral and ethical struggles. Many leaders in the Indian independence movement, including Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, were inspired by the Bhagavadgitas appeal for selflessness.
